The Soay is Britain's most primitive breed of native sheep, named after the island of Soay in the St. Kilda group of islands in the Outer Hebrides. "Soay" means "Island of Sheep" in Old Norse suggesting that these sheep have existed on the island since at least the time of the Vikings. At Marlfield Farm we are privileged to have a small flock of these wonderful little sheep. Soay sheep generally shed their entire fleece naturally, which means it has to be either collected in the field or plucked (rooed) from the animal in spring or early summer. Their fleece is unique with a staple length of 5-15cm and a weight of up to 2kg.
